Perhaps it was an episode of the Simpsons that summed it up best. Homer selfishly buys Marge a bowling ball for her birthday. Homer's plot backfires when a french bowling aficionado slash "don juan" of sorts - Jacques - becomes smitten with Marge at a time when she was quite vulnerable. Homer was being, well Homer was being Homer. When our casanova invites Marge to brunch, she replies with the innocence of a baby's coo - "what is brunch?"
